Velaux : les pompiers se préparent à faire face à la saison des incendies
29 septembre 2023
Summarizing the video transcript, firefighters in the Bouches-du-Rhône department are facing the consequences of climate change and need to adapt quickly. The area is a high-risk zone with a combination of an urban fabric, an oil terminal, and a forest area covering 180,000 hectares. Every week, firefighters train at the Velaux training center to simulate real-life situations.
The training center has a forest fire simulator that allows firefighters to train in virtual reality, similar to a video game. The simulator helps them prepare for various operational scenarios, including the combined effects of natural fires and their impact on the surrounding areas.
The training center also has 23 structures equipped with gas burners that simulate trees and replicate real fire conditions. Pascal Chauvet, a chief at a fire station in La Montagnette, emphasizes the importance of training and passes on the message to young firefighters to be cautious and vigilant when facing wildfires. He advises them to walk rapidly and be aware of the changing conditions and potential dangers.
The center’s unique landscape of trees allows firefighters to experience the effectiveness of their personal protective equipment (PPE). Their PPE provides maximum safety against radiation and heat from the fires. They are taught to take care of themselves, stay hydrated, and listen to the advice of experienced firefighters.
Maintaining such a sophisticated training complex costs the department 6 million euros per year. In addition to training, they need to deploy more resources in the field due to the extended wildfire season. The risk of wildfires has increased in recent years, with some areas in France experiencing fires in unexpected locations like Sarthe, Brittany, and Jura.
Although the government has provided funding to combat wildfires, the consequences and results will not be immediate. It takes time to see the impact of the investments in equipment and resources. Despite the challenges, all firefighters, regardless of their status, share the common goal of being well-prepared. The 4,500 volunteers among the 5,700 firefighters in Bouches-du-Rhône are committed to protecting the region in the face of increasing wildfire threats.
